Alex Loughton (born 3 May 1983, in Perth, Western Australia) is an Australian professional basketball player for the Cairns Taipans.

Loughton began to make a name for himself when he was selected in the Australian Under-20 team; he went on to average 17.4 ppg and 10.3 rpg[1] and it was not long before scouts began to take notice of Alex. He went to America to play college basketball with Old Dominion University. In his first season he started all but two games and averaged 8 points and 6 rebounds. In his following, Alex hauled a career best 45 points and 15 rebounds and backed it up with a very consistent season and averaged 17 ppg and 9 rpg for the 2004 season. But Loughton never really recaptured that same form. Alex went on to win CAA Player of the Year and Tournament MVP in 2005. But he finished his college career with 1,646 career points and 952 career rebounds;[2] which ranks him tenth all-time in ODU scoring, sixth in rebounding and seventh all-time in CAA rebounding.

In October 2009, Loughton was named to the Colonial Athletic Association Silver Anniversary team[3] for his career at Old Dominion. He was also selected to Collegeinsider.com Mid Major All-Decade team.[4]

Professional career

Considered an outside chance to be selected in the 2006 NBA draft, Loughton had a few NBA trials with New Orleans. However, he was overlooked in the NBA draft, and instead signed with Spanish basketball team Aguas Gandia.

After a reasonable season with Aguas Gandia, Alex signed with the Perth Wildcats in the NBL and played in the 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons.

For 2009/10 Loughton went to Spain to play with Ourense Baloncesto[5] in the Liga Española de Baloncesto.

Loughton will return to Australia in 2010/11 to play for the Cairns Taipans.
